''Here is my number in case you need anything or anything is wrong'' 

Smiling, I nod my head, fold up the piece of paper and let it disappear in my pocket. It is really nice when you are a stranger abroad and you meet people there who offer to be your contact person. I immediately don't feel so alone any more, because now I have a contact person in case of emergency. And it doesn't stop with just one. In the course of the first week, I collect more numbers - a nice feeling. There is only one

catch... I don't know the local language.

Day X comes when I need help. I dial the first number, the person answers and I say my name. Now what? How do I explain my situation to her? While I am still thinking, the connection breaks down. Oh no, I have to try again. But first I have to sort out the words I know and have them ready. The person will then have to figure out the connection for herself. So I dial the number again. The call comes through. This time

I summon up all my courage and say the words in my head. An answer comes promptly. At first I am happy that I have been understood, but at second I realise that I did not recognise a single word! The woman spoke far too quickly, and besides, I can't see her. I cannot rely on my ears alone at all. Again I falter and search for words. And again the connection breaks down. Frustrated, I lower the receiver in my hand, put the note back in my pocket and step out of the phone box. It doesn't work like that.

This episode, which is experienced a few years ago, clearly shows me to this day how important language skills of the respective national language are. Not everywhere do we get anywhere with our mother tongue or English, as it was with me during my first stay in Mexico. I completed a six-week teaching internship, which I supplemented

with travel within the country at weekends, and which presented me with constant linguistic challenges.

Through our teaching experience at home and abroad, we expertise in intercultural and social skills in both heterogeneous and homogeneous groups. Our aim is to support the pupils and students in learning German in the best possible way and using a variety of methods, to bring them as close as possible to German culture in a creative way and to accompany them as people for a part of their life.
